This is the first book of Gila Green's that I've read and it did not disappoint. The stories are linked by the same protagonist, Miri, a Canadian born to a Yemenite-Israeli father and Ashkenazic-Canadian mother. Green's prose is evocative and reflects both painful and loving moments in Miri's family. I particularly enjoyed the stories of old Jerusalem. The tales Miri's father shares -- or Miri imagines -- reminded me of Amos Oz's A Tale of Love and Darkness. No matter where one falls on the religious spectrum, Miri's conflicts as she matures, marries and becomes a mother are both thought-provoking and easy to identify with. Highly recommend!
